Featured Brand of the Month: Nunn Design - Week Four

For our final week highlighting Nunn Design, let's take a look at some of their most popular and versatile components: their selection of Bezel and Resin Pendants and Links.

These lovely pieces allow your imagination to run wild. As you look through their collection, you will find a variety of options that will work beautifully with many mixed media techniques and components such as epoxy clay, resin, collage art paper and more. I personally love using Nunn Design bezel pendants in my projects and think they work especially well with Crystal Clay and  chatons. The possibilities are endless and it is so much fun to experiment and explore.

Featured Project: Bijoux Noir Ring by Karlin

This week's featured project is Karlin's Bijoux Noir ring, which uses a Nunn Design antiqued silver plated bezel floral ring, black Crystal Clay and a Preciosa chaton medley in Jet. The outcome is a slightly edgy, somewhat vintage-inspired piece that can easily be personalized with any color of Crystal Clay or chatons that you like.

Featured Video: How to do Faux Enameling with Crystal Clay and Resin by Becky Nunn

In this week's featured video, Becky Nunn of Nunn Design teaches us how to get the look of an enameled piece of jewelry using epoxy clay and resin. Although resin may seem intimidating at first, this intriguing technique is surprisingly simple. Watch the video below to learn more!

Designer Picks:

Julie:

My favorite bezel might seem like an odd choice to some. Measuring only 14mm, the petite Nunn Design Antique Gold Plated Pewter Rectangle Bezel is a versatile component that I have used in many different designs. I have found the small size to be perfect for both earrings and necklaces. Also, the bezel edges are ideal for creating the perfect amount of surface tension when doming resin inside the bezel.

Megan:

The Lace Edge Round Bezel Pendants are my favorite bezels from Nunn Design.  These cups are a little different from the solid bezels, as they aren't meant to contain resin for mixed media pieces.  Instead, these little cups provide a decorative setting for cabochons.  They add such a pretty finishing touch - and you can even bend the loops down and use them to hang your piece.

Kat:

The Nunn Design Bright Silver Plated Pewter Key Bezel Pendant is my favorite bezel.  I love the ornate detail on the bow of the key and if you look closely you will see a crown in the bezel cup.  Also, because this key is 73mm long it could be made into a fun personalized a key chain.

Karlin:

I love the new bezel brooches from Nunn Design's Winter Collection! They just lend themselves so beautifully to vintage-inspired designs and have the perfect ornate touch. My favorite is the antiqued silver round brooch bezel pendant. I look forward to experimenting with resin and adding in some of my artwork.

We hope you enjoyed exploring Nunn Design, February's featured Brand of the Month. If you are itching to jump in and get your hands on some of these gorgeous components, be sure to stay tuned for some exciting news later this week!

Featured Brand of the Month: Nunn Design - Week Three

Karlin's Silver Collar Necklace
Sometimes the key to making your pieces look cohesive and finished is the accents that you use.  Selecting bead caps and accent beads that match the feel of your design make all the difference in the world.  This week, we are taking a look at Nunn Design's Beads, Caps, and Cones - and they are the
perfect way to add a romantic touch to your designs!

Karlin's Silver Collar Necklace is a great example of how Nunn Design beads can transform a piece.  Her dainty, feminine necklace is taken to a whole new level by adding the simple, beautiful Silver Plated Faceted Oval Bead from Nunn Design.  It adds an elegant touch that really finishes the design wonderfully.

Featured Video:

Use bead caps in an entirely new way with this technique by Becky Nunn.  She uses Crystal Clay and Crystal Chatons to create fancy links with Nunn Design bead caps, and this video will show you how to do it.

Designer Picks:

Julie

The Nunn Design Antique Gold Plated Faceted Round Beads are perfect for my jewelry making style.  They match my aesthetic to a tee, and they add such a pretty finishing touch to any piece.  Their versatility makes them an ideal accent for any project.

Megan

I remember when we first saw the faceted metal beads from Nunn Design.  I was smitten!  My favorites are the Silver Plated Faceted Drop Beads.  They're classic and glamorous, and turn any piece into something really special.

Kat

I adore the Urchin Bead Caps in Gold.  Just imagine them paired with 7mm freshwater cultured pearls.  They're wonderful pieces because they add a fun element of texture to your design no matter what you pair them with.

Karlin

I love the look of Nunn Design bead caps and one of my favorites has to be the Antiqued Silver Plated Sea Hive Bead Cap. These detailed bead caps have a cute bee hive design that can add a touch of whimsy to your jewelry.

Featured Brand of the Month: Nunn Design - Week Two

One of the things that I love most about Nunn Design is that their pieces are so unique that the work you create with them will instantly become a piece of wearable art. Becky Nunn has done a wonderful job of making metal components that inspire me and drive my designs forward. Their elements provide me that spark of creativity, while still allowing the versatility for my ideas to flourish.

Fleur de Lis Necklace by Megan Milliken

This week we will be sharing our favorite pendants from Nunn Design. The gold, copper and silver pendants match perfectly with the rest of their line to make it easy to get a cohesive look. The Nunn Design pendants are the perfect example of what I mean when I say that their products are versatile. Some of their pendants are actually pendant tags, which means they are designed to fit snugly into their bezel pendants. These pendant tags are flat and do not come with a drilled hole. If you do not want to put a pendant tag into a bezel pendant, you can use a simple metal punch tool and add a hole anywhere you like. They can be used for many mixed media projects too - just add some Crystal Clay or resin and you have a whole new look. And just in case you want a more traditional pendant, they have those for you as well. Check out their entire pendant selection under the Nunn Design brand page on our website.

Project Highlight: Keepsake Glass Vial Necklace with Flower
by Julie Bean

Another kind of unique pendant from Nunn Designs is the Keepsake Pendant. The Keepsake Pendant is a screw top glass vial that can be used to hold a number of things. For example, you can use it to hold a special note, a bit of sand from your latest vacation, or even a 3-D beaded element as shown in Julie's design. The possibilities are endless, and as an added bonus, this makes a beautiful gift or very special gift tag embellishment.

Designer Picks:

Julie

I have always been a big fan of Nunn Design for their old world style and elegance. When Becky Nunn came out with the ornate flat tag pendants several launches ago I was immediately captivated and inspired by their interesting shapes and designs. My favorite has to be the Crest Pendant and I can't wait to try out Becky's faux french enameling technique on it!

Megan

I have long had a soft spot for lockets.  I especially love the Nunn Design Scalloped Locket Pendant.  This piece has a classic bezel pendant, which provides endless design possibilities - but it also has a hinged glass lid, which gives your work a pretty, finished look.  It also provides protection for your piece, giving you even more freedom to choose what to include in your locket.

Kat

My personal favorite is this antique gold plated shield tag pendant. When I look at this tag, my first instinct is to utilize many of the mixed media techniques that include transfer sheets and resin. I love the idea of having the floral impression be the front side and adding a secret word or picture to the blank side. My own personal open locket.

Karlin

One of my favorite pendants from Nunn Design is the antiqued silver plated flat tag ornate regiment pendant from the Elements of Inspiration Collection. I just love the slightly raised edge because it allows me to add my own embellishments inside, like Crystal Clay with chatons or even flatbacks.

Featured Brand of the Month: Nunn Design - Week One

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, the design team at Beadaholique has picked a brand that evokes a sense of romance and classic glamour.  The Brand of the Month for February is Nunn Design.

Nunn Design offers a wide variety of beautiful products ranging from charms to bezel pendants to findings and more.  The style is a mix of old world meets whimsical charm.  I personally love using their pieces and think they add a polished yet ornate look to my jewelry.  If you enjoy using mixed media, collage art, or resin in your jewelry, then the components by Nunn Design are definitely for you.

As we begin exploring Nunn Design this month, we will be showcasing a different category of products each week.  This week is all about Nunn Design charms.  Whether you like your charms in antiqued silver, or bright gold plated; in a playful design or something more elegant, you can find a charm by Nunn Design that fits your taste.

Featured Project: Embellished Marigold Earrings by Julie Bean

In her Embellished Marigold earrings, Julie uses large solid brass Nunn Design Marigold Flower embellishments.  This embellishment is from Nunn Design's Elements of Inspiration collection and is a perfect accent piece that can be mixed with different finishes and styles of jewelry.

Featured Video:  How to Use Nunn Design Micro Screw and Nuts Set

This helpful video explains how to use Nunn Design's Micro Screw and Nut Sets to create a cold connection in jewelry making.  These easy to use components do not require a hammer and bench block like traditional rivets yet give a similar appearance.  In this video, Julie shows you how to make her lovely Embellished Marigold earrings using these screws and nuts.

Designer Picks:

 Julie

One of my all time favorite Nunn Design charms has to be the highly detailed (right down to the feathers) Bird charm. Measuring 22mm, this charm is the perfect size to be worked into a bracelet, a pair of earrings, or even a mixed media collage piece. Tip: try painting the bird and then sealing it with Nunn Design Sealant, it looks really really cool!

Megan

Call me a purist, but I do love the classic shapes when it comes to charms.  One of my favorite Nunn Design charms is the classic puffed heart.  It's incredibly usable, and works into a very wide variety of designs.  I love to use basic little charms like this one to add that extra touch to a piece, giving them just a little bit of added romance.

 Kat

There is something about this copper plated pewter Fleur de Lis that I am drawn to.  The Nunn Design copper elements are my favorite because the color is so perfectly brushed and weathered that looks like it came off an old iron fence.  The care and detail of their pieces makes them high quality pieces that I love to use in my designs over and over again.

Karlin

I adore this Nunn Design solid brass honey bee embellishment! Julie used it for her Queen Bee ring, and I must say, it's one of my all time favorite projects on the Beadaholique site. It's so whimsical and unique and allows you to add some playfulness to your jewelry.

We will be showcasing Nunn Design for the rest of February, so stay tuned each week. And don't forget to share your favorite charm in the comments below. We'd love to hear from you!

New Videos From Beadaholique & Becky Nunn!

Becky Nunn of Nunn Design was gracious enough to come in last week and tape several videos on some of her great new techniques.  She was such a delight to have in our studio.  We are proud to announce that we have the first five videos available and ready for you.  So, without further ado, here is Becky Nunn!

How to do Faux Enameling with Crystal Clay and Resin by Becky Nunn

In this video, Becky uses her Nunn design bezels and Crystal Clay in black, along with Gel Du Soleil UV Epoxy to make a completed focal piece.  Becky has a wonderful way of turning a simple item into a whimsically embellished design.

How to Turn Leftover Crystal Clay into Beads, Dangles, and Accents by Becky Nunn

This is a video I wish I had seen long ago.  Becky walks us through different ways to use any left over Crystal Clay to form accent beads so that none of your Crystal clay will ever go to waste again.

How to Alter a Charm using UV Resin and Transfer Sheets by Becky Nunn

Becky has wonderful ideas, especially when it comes to the design of her components.  In this video, she explains how universal her components are and how they can really be manipulated to suit your personal style.  I love her use of the transfer sheets to achieve a truly personal look.

How to Embellish a Channel Bead Core with a Strand of Beads by Becky Nunn

By using channel beads and Crystal Clay, Becky adds seed beads to make a wonderfully embellished bead.  She even shows us examples of how to use larger beads for the same technique.

How to Texturize Crystal Clay with Rubber Stamps and Make a Bracelet by Becky Nunn

This video is my favorite.  Becky's idea for this bangle bracelet is so inventive.  If you remember her previous tutorial about how to make a channel bangle with seed beads this one starts the same way, but instead of seed beads she uses a rubber stamp to texturize, and gilders paste to bring that texture out.  I don't know about you but I definitely want to give this technique a try.  Also, at the end of this video Becky gives you her "Dog and Pony Show" for many of her wonderful designs.

A huge thanks to Becky Nunn for coming to share her expertise with us.  We will be sharing more videos soon, so keep checking back with us.  Take a look here to see all of the Nunn new products for Fall.  And right now they are on SALE!

Guest Designer Project from Becky Nunn

Becky Nunn of Nunn Design has a made a project just for us! She created a fantastic bangle bracelet set using Crystal Clay and Miyuki delica seed beads. You can go onto our website under our Free Projects section and see the full ingredient list and purchase all the supplies.  And be sure to check out our Nunn Design Sale, going on now thru Monday July 22!

Here's a quick tip from Becky before you begin this project:

"Sometimes it is challenging for me to try something new. I can easily get caught up in the "what ifs" or the discomfort that I feel when I'm not sure if I'll be good at something new. I need to have a conversation with myself in which I say "Becky, it is okay to do something new for the pure joy of exploring. It is okay for you to step out of your comfort zone and make a mess". I tend to design products and projects that allow myself and others to Practice Redo and Reuse. Because, sometime the first go doesn't look all that great. So, with this project, allow yourself to have fun and know that if you aren't liking how it is turning out, pull the clay and beads out, wipe it down and try again. Enjoy the process! Happy Creating!" - Becky Nunn

Step 1: Open the package of Crystal Clay. Inside you will find your clay as well as a pair of gloves and an applicator toothpick. Adorn your gloves, pinch off a nickel size ball of part A and part B of the Crystal Clay and start-a-mixing. Keep blending the clay together until the color is consistent and there is no marbling.

Step 2: I take my gloves off from here on out. Create an 8-inch snake with the mixed ball of Crystal Clay from Step 1. Do this by rolling the clay in the palm of your hands.

Step 3: Place the snake of Crystal Clay into the base of the Channel Bangle. To begin, press the end down firmly to the Channel Bangle. I pressed the rolled snake of clay down with my left thumb, then pushed it forward and stretched it out flat while my right hand held the excess snake of clay. I then slightly pulled and rotated the bracelet slowly. It may take your own system to get comfortable, but in Step 3 you are laying the clay down into the Channel. I try to keep the clay flush with the side edges.

Step 4: Place your seed beads onto a flat surface. You may need to turn some of the seed beads so the holes are all facing up. I used two business cards to create an 8.5” long strip of beads, about the width of the Bangle Bracelet.

Step 5: Starting at one end of your 8.5” strip of seed beads, press the Bangle Bracelet Channel loaded with Crystal Clay into the seed beads. Use the tips of your fingers to gently press down the Bangle along the inside curved surface. Continue to roll the bangle across your strip of seed beads until you have made the full loop.

Step 6: Use your fingers to pat down the seed beads into the Crystal Clay. I also used my fingernails to go along the outside edge of the Channel Bangle, making sure that a bunch of excess isn’t spilling over the sides. If you do have excess, use a wet wipe and wipe away the Crystal Clay while it is soft. It will be a real challenge to get off once it is set, so take your time and clean as you go. Set the bracelet aside for about an hour – you want the seed beads to be firmly set (but not completely cured) for the next step.

Step 7: Okay, we are on step 7 here and I told you this was an easy project. At this point you are probably thinking I’m a big fat fibber, but it wasn’t all that hard. In fact the pictures above are the first two samples I ever made…hang in there!

Step 8: Really Step 7, but who’s counting. If you had excess clay from Step 3, you will use if for this next step. If you don’t have extra clay, you will need about a pea size ball of parts A and B. Once the Crystal Clay is fully mixed, snake it out into a thin long snake. You will be basically using the thin strip of Crystal Clay to make a slip (like when working with pottery). Wrap the thin strip of Crystal Clay around the bangle. Then get the Clay wet - I placed my fingers in water – get the clay very wet and then gently rub it over the seed beads. The clay will fill all of the little holes.

Step 9: Use a wet wipe to wipe away the excess clay. I again used my fingernails to go along the outside edges of the Bangle Bracelet Channel to clean up that side edge. If you don’t have fingernails because you bit them all off stressing if you were going to wrap this project up or not, use a butter knife.

Note: To make the  little bezel bracelet, follow the same instructions as above but modify them for the small bezels.

Thanks Becky for making this great project for us!

Product Spotlight: Nunn Design Micro Screw & Nut Set

When these new micro screw and nut sets arrived from Nunn Design our designers couldn't wait to get their hands on them. This has to be one of the coolest (pun intended) new forms of cold connections since E6000!  For me personally this is such a great introduction into metal work, especially since the idea of using a torch comes across as a bit daunting to me.  You're able to layer different types of metal and, after using a hole punch, screw them together, no hammering, nothing!  You can see how they can be put to use in Julie's latest video: How to Use Nunn Design Micro Screw and Nut Sets. The earrings made in this video are so cute, by the way!

Beading Table Wednesday: 2/21/13

Julie's Table

This design started out simply with the desire to coat some Lillypilly copper sheets in resin. I had seen this technique done in Tucson and I knew I had to try it out for myself. I chose a pretty embossed copper sheet with red wine patina, set it down into a rectangular bezel, and then poured a nice layer of resin on top. Then I just stared at it for a couple days until the design came to me. I went with an Chinese theme and played off the bamboo design in the copper sheet and the bamboo design in the Vintaj stamping. To pull it all together I added Palace Green SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS flat backs and a Nunn Design bee. The name of the necklace is Taikang Road which is a little artist street in Shanghai that I thoroughly enjoyed shopping this past December.
