A Sneak Peek at CzechMates Triangles!

Our CzechMates Triangle Beads are now available!  See all of the gorgeous colors HERE.

I'm really excited that we're adding all of the CzechMates 2-Hole System to our website.  I'm such a fan of bead weaving, and the different shapes of these beads offer so many new possibilities.  Be sure to check out our new selection as it goes live over the next couple of days.

One of the shapes I'm having fun experimenting with is the brand new CzechMates Triangle Bead.  It hasn't even been released yet, so I thought I'd give you all a little bit of a teaser and show you what's on my table today.  I've been working on a sort of modified triangle stitch using these unique new beads that I'm simply thrilled with.  The peaks of the triangles give such a dynamic look to the stitch!

These little beauties will be released in February, and wait until you see the colors and finishes - they're drool-worthy!  Keep an eye out for them, and for some new inspirational projects to help you get started with these new beads.

Beading Table Wednesday July 24, 2013

Kat's Table

This week I am going retro!  I found these great Sea Green Acrylic Beads.  I am not sure how they are going to play into my project but I just couldn't resist how great they look with the black beads.  I just love when I find a product that I am inexplicably drawn to.  This one is a challenge but I am looking forward to just playing around today.

Karlin's Table

I love the shiny, pretty Czech beads that are being incorporated into my projects this week.  I ended up pairing my sapphire beads with some cool metallic silver spikes which I think gives my necklace a feminine, yet edgy look. This should be a fun, busy week full of new, colorful pieces.

Inspiration Mondays: Art Nouveau

When you hear the term "Art Nouveau", what images come to mind?  A vintage poster portraying a languidly lounging woman draped in flowing Neoclassical garb?  A floral brooch comprised of impossible looping and curvilinear symmetry?  Perhaps a building facade in Prague that is downright preternatural in appearance?

Alphonse Mucha's Four Seasons

All of these subjects exemplify the vision and philosophy behind Art Nouveau, a very stylized movement in the world of art, architecture, furniture, jewelry, and advertisement.  Even though its heyday spanned from the early 1880's until roughly 1910, Art Nouveau's unique aesthetic continues to inspire generation after generation of creative individuals... especially creative individuals in the wonderful world of beading and jewelry making.

Rene Lalique Brooch

We Beadaholics are no exception to this rule.  Over the years, our designers have created many projects with Art Nouveau flavor.  Incorporating elements like Czech glass cathedral beads, Vintaj brass stampings, and our own silver plated stampings, we often channel our inner Alphonse Mucha and Rene Lalique.

Check out our free project instructions here.

Are you as inspired by Art Nouveau as we are?  Show us your nouveau-esque designs!

Happy Beading,

Bragging or Thanking

To those of you who read our blogs, it should come as no surprise when we say how much we love Vintaj products.   Of course, we carry all their products, and we hope you will always get them from our website.

HOWEVER, you absolutely must visit the Vintaj site, especially the Vintaj Idea Gallery. They have hundreds and hundreds of designs.   It's almost embarrassing how many times one of their projects can make you mutter to yourself, "I would never have thought of using that piece like *that*!"

So we were pretty excited when we saw a recent bunch of Vintaj Idea projects using some of our beads.  The projects are so beautiful, we just wanted to thank Vintaj, and share them with you.  Yes, okay, we are bragging about it, too.

Floating Floret
Forest Faerie
First up, the Floating Floret necklace (l) mixes Vintaj Brass & Vintaj Arte Metal.  It uses some of our Czech table cut beads, and Czech drop beads, among others.

The lovely Forest Faerie necklace (r) utilizes more table cuts, and some opaque and two-tone fire polish beads.

Gatekeeper Necklace
The stunning Gatekeeper Necklace makes use of our freshwater pearls and more fire polish beads to help evoke the entrance to the Emerald City of Oz.  The intricate layerings of color and pattern in this piece are truly magical.

Anthropology Treasure
I have to confess, the Anthropology Treasure Necklace is my favorite out of this bunch.  It's not just because one of our hand-picked beads forms the centerpiece (okay, that is pretty cool).  It's the clever and wonderful way this bead has been made to look like a mysterious and antique artifact.  Was it part of an ancient jade statue?  A ceremonial weapon?  A symbolic charm of power for some ancient priest or warrior?  I know *I* never thought of anything like this when I purchased these beads.  How wonderful that Rose Noble at Vintaj has!

St. Patty Earrings
Obviously, the Vintaj team has been following a green theme here, and if you haven't realized why, this last project should make it clear.  The St. Patty Earrings design features some Czech leaf beads, and some pretty unique freshwater pearls we had in stock until they sold out.

Pearls and stone beads often have that issue - it is usually difficult to get identical stock in again of the more unusual colors and shapes.  So if you see pearls or gemstones you like, you should get while you can, whether you are shopping online or at a gem show.

Pretty neat projects, right?   Check the Vintaj Idea Gallery often, there are always new wonders to be seen.  And you can make lots of them with the help of Vintaj and Beadaholique.

Crystal vs. Glass Beads - what's the deal?

Many times on the web, especially on auction sites, we see beads described as 'crystal' that we would call 'glass'. The biggest category that gets mis-described this way is Czech Fire Polish beads. They are glass, not crystal, as we detail below.

Regular glass is mainly made of Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), with the addition of other ingredients, such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO) and Aluminim Oxide. The resulting glass contains about 70 to 72 percent silica by weight and is called a soda-lime glass. Soda-lime glasses account for about 90 percent of manufactured glass.

In general, man made 'crystal' is a glass that has had one or more of certain minerals added to a standard glass formulation to make the product more brilliant. Lead is the mineral of choice here, as lead oxide added to the molten glass gives lead crystal a much higher index of refraction than normal glass, and consequently much greater "sparkle". The presence of lead also makes the glass softer and easier to cut.

As far as we know Swarovski crystal beads have the highest lead content of any bead that can be called crystal. The design of the cuts is also important, just as in cutting gemstones. At Swarovski, the angles of the facets are set up to maximize refraction and reflection of light, thus making their products as brilliant as possible. One thing you may have noticed is that the more facets on a cut bead (of any kind, crystal or gemstone), the higher the price. However, the more facets, the more brilliant and pretty the bead, so you get what you pay for.

The Czechoslovakian companies, such as Preciosa, make quite nice crystal beads, but they do have a lower lead content, and less modern cuts. Thus, they are not quite as brilliant as Swarovski products. Also, the Czech companies are not as aggressive in constantly creating new cuts, colors and finishes, as Swarovski has been for the last few years.

Czech glass beads, as opposed to Czech crystal beads, are just glass, with no special mineral additives. They are lighter, and are often molded or 'pressed' into creative shapes. Czech Fire Polish beads are glass beads (NOT crystal) that are cut into faceted shapes. However, the cuts are imprecise, and there is no mechanical polishing done. Instead the roughly cut glass beads are heated in special ovens. The surfaces and cut edges melt a little in the heat and smooth out nicely. The beads are then removed before they melt down entirely (we have seen some half-melted ones, just little bubbled lumps, it was amusing). Special coatings are applied after this stage.

A word about Chinese "crystal" beads. Humph. We have our doubts. They are super light weight, which alone indicates an absence of significant mineral additives. Their faceting is minimal, so this adds to their lack of brilliance. Yes, they are inexpensive and colorful. They are excellent for projects for young people. Are they really 'crystal' glass, or just regular glass? Who knows? Accept them for what they really are, and you won't be disappointed.
